Art students visited The Saint Croix Island International Park this fall. One trip offered a demonstration on Wabanaki basketmaking. Sculpture was the theme of another visit where a park ranger led a tour of the large bronze statutes on the site. His commentary combined history and art appreciation. Students made outdoor sketches of the statues before returning to school.
Art students traveled to The Common Ground Fair on a sunny day in late September. The day invited them to wander the fairgrounds through tents and walkways to explore many displays, and demonstrations featuring Maine produced goods and services. The day also included live entertainment and multicultural food offerings.
Art students are currently creating postcards for a Mail Art Exhibit at the Heartwood School of Art in Kennebunk. This year’s theme is “Declare Your Independence”.
Ms. Loper attended “The Arts in Maine Schools” conference in Rockport this month. She was inspired by the keynote speaker who urged teachers to rekindle their passion for nurturing student creativity. He implied that creativity finds its power when adults are less tied to prescriptive teaching methods. He also reminded them that the arts and entertainment business is a growth industry and one of our nations leading exports. The 2-day conference included dozens of seminars. Favorites were Digital Storytelling and the child centered Reggio approach where children are viewed as strong and capable protagonists.
