Falling Into Winter

Can Boys Make This Year A Threepeat? 66-0?

With fall sports at CHS over, students have begun shooting hoops, performing back flips, and bringing opponents to the mat. Yes, winter sports started on Monday, November 19, with the first day of tryouts and practice for winter teams and so did the hard work. Anxious to replicate last year’s success, CHS students are optimistic about the 2007-08 season and ready to bring home more championships.

After an amazing 2007 playoff season, in which they knocked off the undefeated Washington Academy Lady Raiders and the strong Penobscot Valley Howlers, the Calais girls’ basketball team is ready to bring the gold back to Calais. Last season, the team finished the regular season in eighth place, but went on to be named the Eastern Maine runner-ups, losing a close game to Dexter 38-45. Since the last state championship in 2001, Calais girls have won the DAC championship twice and been Eastern Maine Champions once, in 2002. In the very competitive Class C bracket, now with the Lee Academy Pandas, this year will certainly be tough, but the Calais Lady Blue Devils will undoubtedly be tougher.

Boys’ basketball players must work harder than ever this season to continue an undefeated streak that has amazed basketball gurus from around the state. After winning the first ever state championship in 2006, the boys have gone on to win the DAC Championship, Eastern Maine Championship, and another State Championship, making their current record 44-0. In the 2007 State Championship, Calais beat Boothbay 66-70, after toppling Penquis Valley and sending Houlton back to “the county.” This year, team captains Nathan O’Neill and Sam Bell will have the responsibility of bringing another gold ball home to Calais. My prediction: make room in the trophy case, 66-0.

CHS cheerleaders had a great season last year, coming off of an Eastern Maine Championship in 2006. With much of the talent returning this season, the devils’ team will definitely be strong in school spirit.

Team Captain John Hatt leads the CHS wrestlers this year as they try to capture the first individual State Championship for CHS since 1997. Coach Dean is working the wrestlers hard to get them into shape for what is sure to be an exciting season.
