Mathematics Courses

Fundamental Math

Year / 1 Credit / Grades 9-12

This course is primarily for grade nine students who have significant weaknesses in the basic skills of arithmetic operations. The basic operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals are reviewed. Some time is spent on problem solving and percent. An introduction to geometry and algebra is provided as well. The course strengthens a student’s knowledge of mathematical concepts and principles, and should stimulate a desire for further study in math.

Integrated Mathematics Level 1

Year / 1 Credit / Grades 9-12

An integrated mathematics program consists of topics from a wide variety of mathematical fields that emphasize the relationship among topics within mathematics and other disciplines. Level 1 concentrates on the knowledge and understanding that students need to become mathematically literate citizens, while providing the necessary foundation for those who wish to pursue careers involving mathematics and science. Contexts for the preparation of mathematics include the properties of reflected light, population growth, the AIDS epidemic and the manufacture of cardboard containers. Mathematical content includes data collection, presentation and interpretation, introduction to linear, exponential and step equations; and three-dimensional geometry, including surface area and volume.

Integrated Mathematics Level 2

Year / 1 Credit / Grades 10-12

This course completes the knowledge and understanding that students need to become mathematically literate citizens, while providing the necessary foundation for those who wish to pursue careers in mathematics and science.

Integrated Mathematics Level 3

Year / 1 Credit / Grades 11-12

This math class is the third year of integrated mathematics and continues where Integrated Math 2 left off.  This year will cover geometry topics involving quadrilaterals, parallel lines, and circles.  Traditional algebra topics covered include: operations on polynomial functions, finding roots of polynomials including quadratics by factoring, completing the square, and using the quadratic formula and the fundamental theorem of algebra – sequences and series.  Trigonometry topics include solving triangles, working with vectors, and working with circles including graphs of sine, cosine, and tangent functions.  Discrete mathematical topics covered are four-color scheduling theory and topology.

Integrated Mathematics Level 4

Year / 1 Credit / Grade 12

This is the fourth year of integrated mathematics building on Integrated Math 3.  Algebra topics of exponentials and logarithms, rational functions, operations on functions, and parametric equations will be covered.  Geometry topics include a review of Euclidean geometry and finite geometry as defined by a module arithmetic system.  Statistics ideas of probability, distributions, and the chi square are studied.

Integrated Mathematics Level 3 & 4 Combination

Year / 1 Credit / Grades 11-12

This sequence is for students who plan to take Advanced Placement Calculus. This will be a double block class meaning that it meets everyday. Essentially the students are taking two mathematics courses in one year, Level 3 and Level 4.  Students may not drop the course and receive one credit for the Level 3 Mathematics, as concepts from both Level 3 and Level 4 will be presented BOTH semesters.

Advanced Placement Calculus

Year / 1 Credit / Grade 9-12

This is an in-depth study of first-year calculus to prepare students for the AP Calculus Exam. College credit may be earned for a passing grade on the AP exam.

Integrated Mathematics 1A & 1B

Year / 1 Credit / Grades 9-12

This course is being offered to provide practical knowledge of mathematics as it applies to living in a technical world.  Estimating materials, costs measurements, and geometric shapes will be studied and applied to various problems found in technology. This course is recommended for students in Technology Education and any of the vocational programs, as it is a component of the tech prep course of study.

Senior Exploratory Math

Year / 1 Credit / Grade 12

This senior level math course is designed to help prepare students for retaking the SAT, taking a math placement test for college, learn personal finance, and prepare for a college level statistics course.  The first quarter grading period is spent working with the College Board Online preparing for the SAT Exam.  Students read lessons concerning Math topics covered on the SAT, taking practice quizzes related to those topics, and taking the Math parts of the practice SAT tests.  The second quarter is spent reviewing basic arithmetic and algebra concepts from the ACCUPLACER College mathematics Exam.  Personal Finance will be developed in quarter three including goal setting, saving, credit, and using checkbooks.  Last quarter reviews basic Statistics and Probability components

Pre-Advanced Placement Statistics

Year / 1 Credit / Grade 12

Pre-AP Statistics is a course offered through the Virtual High School Online web service in cooperation with Calais High School.  Although students may take classes online, Pre-AP Statistics will be offered in the classroom as well as online with Mr. Moody.  Talk with Mr. Moody for details on curricula and grading.
