Skills for Success Study Hall

Semester or Year /1/2 or1 Credit / Grades 9-12

Calais High School strives to prepare all students to be productive members of our global society.  Each student has diverse, unique, and challenging needs.  Only as students begin to understand their learning strengths and weaknesses and how they affect their academic performance, can they begin to make informed decisions about matters that will affect their future lives.

This course is available only to identified students with Special Needs.  This course will address the following areas:

Targeted academic assistance in written language, math, and reading

Upward Bound

Summer Semester /1/2 credit/ Grades 11-12

Classroom teachers nominate student participants for this program.  Students accepted into the Upward Bound program spend six weeks of the summer at Bowdoin College working on improving academics skills and preparing for college life in the future.

Students successfully attending UB at Bowdoin are awarded .5 elective credits. See Mr. Robb for more information

Early College for ME (Maine)

Fall, Spring, Summer Semester /1/2 credit/ Grades 11-12

Early College for ME is a college transition program designed for Juniors who are undecided about post-secondary training, yet have the potential to succeed in college.  The CHS teachers nominate students for this program.  Early College for ME offers a combination of support, advising, Community College Courses, and scholarships to help students prepare for and be successful in a two-year college.

Virtual High School

Fall and Spring/1/2 to 1 credit/ Grades 10-12

Virtual High School, in accordance with Calais High School, offers students Advanced Placement and Pre-Advanced Placement online courses not offered in the regular curriculum.  Sample courses may include Biology, Chemistry, Economics, and Statistics to name just a few.  Some courses may require prerequisites. Student Mentoring

Fall and Spring/1/2 to 1 credit/ Grades 11-12

Student Mentoring is a program for high school students interested in careers in education, medical, or any related field with particular interest in working with children.  Student Mentors tutor middle school students under the supervision of a teacher during the regular school day.  To receive credit for the course, students may also be asked to keep a journal or teach a class of students via a self-written lesson plan covering one or two class periods.
