2008 Winter Carnival Theme Announced

This year, the Calais High School Student Council has the privilege of hosting the 30th Annual Winter Carnival at CHS, the oldest event of its kind in Washington County. On Tuesday, the council brainstormed many ideas for themes, eventually deciding on Video Games as the 2008 Winter Carnival theme. Classes will have the opportunity in the next week to discuss their choice of video games, as each class president will choose a game for his/her class' theme. Each class will decorate a banner, hallway, and develop a skit in accordance with the theme. A 30th Anniversary Winter Carnival web page has been developed to celebrate the anniversary, here.

Rock-A-Thon Fundraiser
"Extremely Successful"
After collecting many pledges and daring to "out-rock" other classes, the CHS Student Council and National Honor Society participated in a rock-a-thon fundraiser to raise money for the Calais Children's Project Christmas stocking project. Council members rocked for seven hours, from 2 PM until 9 PM, staying entertained by watching movies, listening to music, eating, and playing a new game introduced by Mr. and Mrs. Chaffey, the Cardinal Mexican Train. Pledges are due this week, but if anyone has not yet sponsored a rocker, let any student council member or NHS member know and they will put your donation to a great cause.

Wilkinson Elected as EMASC

High School Representative

After handing out candy canes and stickers, holding up posters, and delivering an amazing speech, the CHS Student Council is proud to announce that CHS sophomore class president Honor Wilkinson has been elected to serve as high school representative on the Eastern Maine Association of Student Councils' executive board. Despite competition from Brewer High School and Penquis Valley High School for the position, Wilkinson won with over 50% of the votes on Tuesday, as the council travelled to the Brewer Auditorium for the 2007 Eastern Region conference. The 2007-08 EMASC president was elected from Penquis Valley High School in Milo, which will host the 2008 regional conference.

At the conference, magician and motivational speaker Bruce Johnson performed, then council members attended student-run workshops. Airelle Thomas, Honor Wilkinson, and David Lumbert ran a very successful workshop, titled Leadership on your Feet. The workshop asked attendees to develop solutions for unforeseen problems. Other workshops included Red Ribbon Week, Running a Successful Campaign. The Mailman, and Running for Jr. High Representative. Swap shops were also held, in which free discussion of school-related issues took place.

Congratulations to Honor Wilkinson and special thanks to the outgoing EMASC executive board, including Calais' Toni Cole, who put on an amazing conference!

Leadership on your Feet Workshop Hosted by Council Members at EMASC Conference

You have eight minutes to find a group of 5-7 students and develop a solution to eliminate world hunger. Not bad. But after 3 minutes, two of your group members are removed and two new members are added. While you are trying to tell your new members what your solution is, they provide additional input from their last groups. Then, to make matters more complicated, you discover that world hunger has been eliminated and you must now determine a solution for homelessness - in two minutes. Welcome to the EMASC workshop, Leadership on your Feet hosted by CHS Student Council President Airelle Thomas, Secretary David Lumbert, and newly-elected EMASC high school representative, Honor Wilkinson.

Leaders are faced with difficult situations every day, but the unexpected does not have to mean failure. In this workshop, students were asked to solve school-related problems dealing with dances, school assemblies, and even cheating. Council members from differenct schools brought past experiences to the workshop and DJ D-Lum of Home Run DJ Service provided music, which motivated some but distracted others. In the end, workshop attendees had a blast and left with better tools and approaches to circumstances beyond their control.

Fundraiser Announced to Fund

Annual Christmas Charity

Rocking in chairs may seem like an activity reserved for Sunday afternoons and nursing homes, but this December, CHS Student Council members will be rocking for a cause. Chosen from a list of several possible fundraisers, the 2007 Rock-a-thon will raise money for the annual Christmas stocking project, in which council members fill stockings for residents of the Calais Children's Project. In conjunction with the CHS National Honor Society, students will rock for eight hours in the CHS library. Those who wish to sponsor "rockers" are asked to sponsor by the hour, such as $3/hr, totalling $24. For more information or to sponsor a rocker, see any council member or NHS member today!

School Service Project Announced by Council

The CHS Student Council has announced that the 2007-2008 school service project will be building stairs to the high school soccer field. Soccer players and fans have long had to hike up a steep hill or walk on the dirt road circling the field, but will now be able to walk up and down with ease to see the devils play soccer. Fundraising will begin soon to pay for this project, which will be beneficial to many CHS students.
