U Maine Cooperative Extension

Rob Dumas (U Maine) and Kathy Savoie (Maine Master Food Preserver Program Coordinator) visited our Culinary Arts Program on behalf of U Maine's Cooperative Extension on November 29. They spent the day providing nutritional education to our students including seasonal cooking, food safety, local agriculture.

Rob, a native of Louisiana, started his career in restaurants around New Orleans. He was also a cook aboard the USS Oklahoma and joined the Presidential Food Service, serving as a chef in the White House Navy Mess during the first Obama administration.  Rob now works with Kathy on a grant-funding activity where they engage with culinary educators and young culinarians in Maine's CTE high schools to teach them about Maine's food system.

Kathy provides educational outreach in Southern Maine and also supervises the Eat Well Program in York, Cumberland, Androscoggin, Sagadahoc and Oxford counties.

The students enjoyed learning a lot about nutrition and how to prepare delicious meals using Maine food products.
