Dear Calais Schools' Family –
We are writing to make you aware of a recent cybersecurity incident involving PowerSchool, a software vendor which provides our Student Information System (SIS), and the schools they serve.
On Tuesday, January 7, 2025, PowerSchool informed our school department that they experienced a cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to certain PowerSchool SIS customer data. Unfortunately, they have confirmed that the information belongs to some of our Calais Schools families and educators.
PowerSchool informed us that the taken data primarily includes parent and student contact information with data elements such as name and address information. Across their customer base, they have determined that for a portion of individuals, some personally identifiable information (PII), such as social security numbers (SSN) and medical information, was impacted. They are working with urgency to complete their investigation and determine whether PII belonging to our students was included. To clarify the Calais School Department does not include student or staff social security numbers in the PowerSchool system.
Protecting our students and staff is something we take seriously. With PowerSchool’s help, more information and resources (including credit monitoring or identity protection services if applicable) will be provided to you as it becomes available.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Sincerely,
Mary Anne Spearin, Superintendent of Schools
The Calais School Dept. will be dismissing all students shortly. Unfortunately, the power outage is expected to last long enough to interfere with lunch and use of facilities. Conferences will still be held tonight at CMHS.
The Calais School Dept would like to let parents know that buses were delayed at dismissal today as a precautionary measure. No imminent threat existed on any of the schools campuses and administration communicated and participated with the local police department to ensure students’ safety.

YOUTH PREPAREDNESS COUNCIL SEEKING APPLICATIONS FROM MAINE STUDENTS
The Youth Preparedness Council (YPC) was created in 2012 to bring together youth leaders interested in supporting disaster preparedness and making a difference in their communities by completing disaster preparedness projects nationally and locally.
The council supports FEMA’s commitment to involve America’s youth in preparedness-related activities. It also provides young people an opportunity to present their perspectives, feedback, and opinions to FEMA staff. Members regularly meet with staff and attend the annual Youth Preparedness Council virtual summit.
FEMA is now accepting applications for the Youth Preparedness Council. This program is a phenomenal opportunity for young leaders in grades eight through 11th. Applications are due no later than March 4th. The link below provides all needed information, including an informational Zoom webinar to learn more. It has been a very long time since Maine had a representative. Can a Calais Middle or High School student help change that?
