Lafayette No.1 is based on: The yellow fever epidemic scourged New Orleans between 1817 until 1905 and is the timeframe the events of this play take place. Julien Poydras and Margaret Haughrey are real historic individuals and Mr. Poydras gave a large lot and house on Poydras Street for the purpose of establishing an asylum for orphans. Established in 1830. Lafayette No. 1 can be found, with the Poydras Orphan's Rest Tomb, in New Orleans. Events in the play are fictional other than this documented history.

YOUTH PREPAREDNESS COUNCIL SEEKING APPLICATIONS FROM MAINE STUDENTS
The Youth Preparedness Council (YPC) was created in 2012 to bring together youth leaders interested in supporting disaster preparedness and making a difference in their communities by completing disaster preparedness projects nationally and locally.
The council supports FEMA’s commitment to involve America’s youth in preparedness-related activities. It also provides young people an opportunity to present their perspectives, feedback, and opinions to FEMA staff. Members regularly meet with staff and attend the annual Youth Preparedness Council virtual summit.
FEMA is now accepting applications for the Youth Preparedness Council. This program is a phenomenal opportunity for young leaders in grades eight through 11th. Applications are due no later than March 4th. The link below provides all needed information, including an informational Zoom webinar to learn more. It has been a very long time since Maine had a representative. Can a Calais Middle or High School student help change that?
