Orange Shirt day ~Every child matters ~ As we honor those indigenous students who were sent to boarding schools and never came back and to the students who did come back and those day school students who found their spirits harmed in so many ways. Once again we have an opportunity to highlight another one of our great teachers here at the Calais School .
Lynn Amakehs Mitchell, Maine Indian Education Facilities Manager, has been selected as the recipient of the prestigious 2024 National Indian Education Association (NIEA) Community Service of the Year Award. This national recognition highlights Ms. Mitchell's outstanding contributions to Native education and her dedication to serving the community.
Lynn Mitchell is a dedicated member of the Passamaquoddy Tribe who has devoted her life
to preserving and promoting her community's language, culture, and heritage.
In her role as the Passamaquoddy Language teacher at Calais High School, Ms. Mitchell has been instrumental in preserving and promoting the Passamaquoddy language. She has developed innovative teaching methods to engage students and make language learning both accessible and exciting. Her classes go beyond mere language instruction, incorporating elements of Passamaquoddy culture and history to provide a holistic learning experience.
Ms. Mitchell organized an annual "Passamaquoddy Language Day" at Calais High School, where students showcase their language skills through presentations, storytelling, and cultural performances. This event has not only boosted student engagement but has also increased community involvement in language preservation efforts.
Congratulations, Ms. Mitchell

We have so much to celebrate and really love to see all the special teachers we have in our Calais School Department being recognized for all of their hard work and years of dedication to our students.
On Friday September 27th, Mrs. Cox traveled to Augusta to receive an award for her many years of dedicated service to kids with disabilities, and more specifically her work with students with Autism.
The Autism Society of Maine (ASM) is a non-profit organization whose membership consists of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), their families, members of the community, and the professionals who work with them. Their mission is to promote lifelong access and opportunity for all individuals on the Autism spectrum to become participating members of their communities.
Ms.Cox has been teaching for 40+ years and currently teaches our Life Skills program where students are given the opportunity to engage in daily activities such as cooking, cleaning, laundry, and other life skills that promote independant living.
We are incredibly thankful for her contributions to our students and their families.
